In the year 1901, due to a continuous growth in the population and the economy, the government in England sanctioned the building of the tramway. In July 1904, the tramline was tested and then operation commenced.


The tram line has run more of less continuously ever since, with the route expanded over the years. The trams remain one of the most iconic elements of Hong Kong Island and are a popular with both locals and tourists.
